A byproduct of the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989, was the reorganisation and downsizing of the U.S. military. One such event took place April 10, 1996 which formally marked the day when the 1st Infantry Division headquarters returned to Europe, sending the 3rd Infantry Div. back to Ft. Stewart, GA. The ceremony itself took place in front of the Wurzburg Resident, one of the most historic buildings in Germany. The location provided a fitting place for the exchange of the division colours of two of the most historic units in the United States Army.
